Chapter 1 The Human Body: An Orientation

 * Maintaining Life

6. Excretion

Excretion is the process of removing wastes, or excreta, from the body.

If the body is to operate as we expect it to, it must rid of nonuseful substances produced during digestion and metabolism.

Several organ systems participate in excretion.

For example, the digestive system rids the body of indigestible food residues in feces and the urinary system disposes of nitrogen-containing metabolic wastes, such as urea, in urine.

Carbon dioxide, a by-product of cellular respiration, is carried in the blood to the lungs, where it leaves the body in exhaled air.

REPHRASED

Excretion means that you remove wastes from the body.

As a body functions and digests food and breathes, nonuseful elements result and the body must rid of them.

There are several organ systems that participate in expelling wastes from the body.

The digestive system gets rid of food residues that cannot be digested in feces.

The urinary system gets out nitrogenous wastes such as urea in the urine.

CO2 which is a by-product that is produced during the respiration of body cells, is carried through the blood to the lungs where it is exhaled out through the nose.
