You establish the question that you want to argue about.

You state the present status of ongoing discussion possibly.

You designate the audience that you want to aim your arguments at.

 

and either

you argue your point for the entire essay

you present different arguments then you end with revealing your own arguement or position at the end

or you point out things that you want to the audience the entire essay without stating your position at all.
